This article is based on the work of Antônia da Silva Mota “Family and Fortuna in Maranhão Colony”, has as its purpose to analyze the relationship in the maintenance of the inheritance, the formation of polítical alliances and the participation of family members Belfort - Gomes de Sousa – Vieira da Silva in the process of resistance and support to independence (1822 – 1823), as well as to relate the reasons of resistance to adherence to the regime of D. Pedro I, mainly in the captaincy of the North.
