Abstract

The present work aims to address the similarities and differences that exist between the characters Vanju and Loureça, in the novel Cais da Sagração, by the writer Josué Montello. The brief study shows important traits that lead the scholar to reflect on the behavior of women within the patriarchal family. The love triangle of Mestre Severino, Vanju and Lourença brings marks that still exist in Brazilian society, such as the submission of women and misogyny, problems that are passed on from father to son. In the work Cais da Sagração, the female characters will meet and separate due to the form of treatment given by the boatman. It is then up to the scholar to observe and draw his own conclusions about society from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. To find out about the similarities and differences between Vanju and Lourença, the names of important theorists such as Mary del Priore, Sueann Caulfield, Todorov, among others, were used as a basis for this small study developed here. The novel Cais da Sagração, published in 1971, certainly continues to be a timeless story up to the present day, because unfortunately, in Brazilian society it is still possible to find some Mestres Severinos, Vanjus and Lourenças, characters of many tragedies in homes. of the so-called traditional family.
